Herford wird bunt 2019
Exactly one year after the successful design of the underpass at Steintor in August 2018, the Herford city centre association has now commissioned us to design two further underpasses in the immediate vicinity of the railway station.
The renovation and maintenance of the lighting had been done years ago, so many men and women got an oppressive feeling when they passed the underpass at night. The aim of the Herford city centre association, the Innenstadtverein Herford, was to rid the city of fearful dreams and unsightly corners. The aim of this project was to create a bright, friendly and generally inviting and positive atmosphere in the underpasses.
Last but not least, the main impulse of the undertaking, like many other things, was due to the people who seem to know the city of Herford like no other. Mathias Polster is not only an enthusiast when it comes to historically exciting facts about Herford's architecture - the trained plasterer also knows how to create rhetorically elegant and witty city tours in such a way that the audience is presented with numerous aha-moments. So it is not surprising that it takes a witty and courageous person like Mathias Polster to perceive his surroundings clearly and consciously and to recognize numerous possibilities for optimization. It is thanks to his cooperation with the Innenstadtverein that Herford's inner city has gained in reputation considerably in recent years.
The actual design of the underpasses required a solid construction. This meant that here too, the substrate to be coated first had to undergo professional cleaning of the wall and ceiling areas. Then the surfaces to be designed were primed white by airless process.
Our team was finally able to start with the true-to-scale transfer of the "Mäander" design. In addition to the colour scheme, which is predominantly light and friendly, the Herford city centre association had a new lighting system installed in the ceiling area of the underpasses. To protect against graffiti, we applied a permanent graffiti protection, thanks to which any dirt can be easily removed.
The design of these underpasses was co-financed with the kind support of the Sparkasse and Volksbank. Many thanks for this!
It is also worth mentioning the joy of almost all passers-by, to whom we were able to give a positive and secure feeling with the friendly colour design - because that was what this project was mainly about.
